Full Employment

Name: Dave BradyDate: 12 August, 2010

Thanks John,
"Full Employment" is just a sign of a undersupplied market and is bad for business. We should be targeting an unemployment rate of about 4%. Surely we can still remember two years to about five years ago when we were struggling to find good people to fill roles.

Also I think that you should join the Twitter chat about Linked In on Wednesday's at noon NZST, just follow #linkedinchat
Cheers

Wetlands Management in Iceland

Name: Peter RichesDate: 12 August, 2010

Hi John,
Thanks for the info on wetlands management in Iceland. I've passed it on to a charity, Newport Wetlands, who run a wetland reserve locally to me. I think it will be of great interest and encouragement to them.

BTW, My residence visa applications are in now - my wife's bringing us home in the next few months to NZ where she grew up.

Kind regards

Peter Riches Celtic Process Control

Hello Peter
Regarding the Wetlands Video, you can never tell what interests people. Which reinforces the idea that many people don't quite understand. On the Internet anyone in your network, is potentially the source of the next snippet of wisdom to cross your desk.
Pleased to hear that the process of getting the family to New Zealand is running smoothly.

Steady State Economics

Name: Jason GloverDate: 16 August, 2010

Interesting stuff John. I must admit your writing style almost put me off reading your newsletter fully (borderline reminiscent of those socialist rags so voraciously handed out at university), but I probably paid more attention than most.

After skimming through your newsletter I went on to Wikipedia to read about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steady_state_economy and eventually http://steadystate.org

I'm not sure what I've taken away from all this, but you've planted a seed.

As a scientist and an ecologist Steady State Economy is a compelling model. It seems obvious that in a "closed" environment you can't keep growing forever. Some more reading is in order....

Jason Glover Team Effect

Hello Jason
Socialist? Me? You have no idea how deeply indoctrinated in capitalist ideology I was, and to a large extent I'm still trapped in that world. The indoctrination of our culture and our miseducation creates significant barriers to real success in our lives. Yet these are all the same things we so eagerly absorb, as the secrets of success. (Listen to your elders, follow the rules, work hard, be devoted to God, be loyal, be professional, accept and apply the standards of you profession. Oh, I almost forget "positive thinking". ) In the short run they work. In the long run that's the trap you are in.

We grow up with this stuff, it's deeply ingrained, it's part of us, and it makes us reliable clones, square pegs for square holes. We are blind to the world as it is. We see only what we've been taught to see. We all need to meet and absorb over a couple of years the lessons of Prof. Gregory Bateson, but sadly he's long dead and his books are out of print.

I was lucky, I realised at 35 that I was a clone of other people in my life. That's something most of us realise at some stage, usually in midlife crisis a few years later. Once you KNOW; that all the things you imagine you "know" is just your indoctrination talking, there's a 20 year journey to discovering who YOU really are. Unlearning is a long an difficult task. Maybe you've just begin that journey Jason. I hope so.
