Online collaboration is not only possible, it is easy! Our business, Arc90, has a product called "Kindling" which is all about ideas, engagement, and collaboration, for innovation in business. Online collaboration is necessary in order to cultivate the best ideas from the people in an organization.

Hello Web
I have a long interest in innovation. I recognise the validity of the process pattern that "kindling" encourages. Online collaboration is for most people an opportunity they miss completely because they come to their computers with a commercial mindset. They are thinking "business" or "sales". Their old mind concepts, are barriers to their success.
To succeed they have to think "where can I help?", "who's got good information?" and "what role can I play to make this concept more viable?".
My theory of innovation isn't popular, but I still think it makes sense. A simple 5 line explanation.
1. Champions are needed, but the champions idea always has a fatal flaw. (Hiding hand)
2. You can never be sure you have available for use the relevant idea set. (keep looking)
3. Without the right mix of people resources, physical resources and money, progress is difficult.
4. There must be community permission for this to happen. Innovations are socially sanctioned.
5. What you've done must be viable in a real world and in a real market. The only relevant test is "do it, and see".
Every line above requires collaboration. I don't agree that collaboration is easy. For instance 100% of innovation champions are blind to the fatal weakness of their idea. That's a serious problem to overcome. Collaboration is the sollution.
My discussion of the apoptosis concept, demonstrates how a product like "Kindling" might be useful.
