Kiwi Scrum, July 2010, Newsletter

Hello Everyone,

Kiwi Scrum has 1841 members.

The July LinkedIn hint:

Spend more time in your LinkedIn Groups.  The value of group discussion is in personally being involved.  If you are the bacon at breakfast, rather than the egg, the discussion matters to you.  That only happens when you, make the effort to understand the discussion and to comment yourself.  That is also the source of your personal growth in the group.  You become what you do.

Which reminds me.  You can join up to FIFTY LinkedIn Groups.  Search your own keywords here.  Too many Kiwi Scrum members are about 40 groups short.  If you are asking why you need to join so many, you have not been reading this newsletter.  Ask if you need to.

The Useful Common:

I've been heavily engaged with Four Years. Go. in the last two months.  So many people there, are waiting for someone to tell them "what's next".   How do I grow my Network?  What should I do with my connections?  How can I make my network useful?  How should I approach people I don't know?   Here's my suggestion.

Find a discussion that's interesting.  Talk to people.  Those groups you've joined might be a good place to start.  Who's interesting?  Who shares a passion for the same things as you?  There's a wonderful discussion on in the 4YGo LinkedIn group about sustainable business (36 letters and counting).  Only two people in Kiwi Scrum are in that network.  It's at 4YGo on LinkedIn Groups, here.

Engage with other people and Groups:

If the thing that's driving you right now isn't being discussed, change that.  Join the right sort of group and fly some kites on the discussion board.  What sorts of replies are you getting?  What can you learn from that?

I've been heavily involved with Ryze in the past.  Ryze discussions have been excellent, but they are in decline.  LinkedIn, in contrast now has a discussion interface that's lively and easy to read and full of potential.

Invitations

In the last month I've invited by personal email, over 220 people to join the 4YGo network here at LinkedIn.  I've added a few, maybe 20, and about as many have joined my personal network.  Success requires effort.  I talked a lot about 4YGo in the June newsletter. Not a single person joined the LinkedIn 4YGo Group. (It wasn't mentioned.)

In the next month can you invite say TEN people to join something you are interested in.  The Kiwi Scrum Network is a good bet.  There are lots of benefits for linkedIn members who can qualify to get in here, and I turn away at least 10 people every month.

Volunteers

You should be aware that I'm trying to make the New Zealand Government, governments around the world, more aware of the foolishness in pursuing GROWTH by looking at the GDP as a measure.  The present financial crisis is I'm afraid a never ending recession.  The problems of Japan, have become the problems of all the developed world.  We have allowed ourselves to be trapped in a no win situation by long dead economists.  This is a topic that needs to be widely discussed.

Chris Laidlaw is trying.  On 4 July he spoke to Juliet Schor, Professor of sociology at Boston College who has a plan for humanity to buy less and live more.  Ogg Vorbis here. MP3 here.

Chris Laidlaw is a member of LinkedIn with ONE connection.

The Value of Engagement

I tried to find out about an English business think tank called "Tomorrow's Company".  They are of interest, but in the process, I discovered Solitaire Townsend and her business Futerra.  There are interesting documents to download, and video on YouTube.
