Kiwi Scrum

September 2009, Newsletter

Hello Everyone,

Kiwi Scrum has 1263 members. Shawn Pate reports that 120 people completed his 2 minute survey.

The September LinkedIn hint:

Join more LinkedIn Groups. The advantage to you is that in joining more groups you can communicate to people your are NOT connected too. That's a free pass to LinkedIn if you use it well.

Subgroups in Kiwi Scrum: I asked months ago if anyone had ideas for Kiwi Scrum Sub-groups. There was no interest. Now we have LinkedIn groups formed for Christchurch, Wellington, Hutt Valley and probably more. They could be subgroups in Kiwi Scrum if that's what people would prefer. I'm in 50 groups now. Every new group means I have to drop an existing one, or ignore the new group. (I'm also happy to build links to your NZ groups. See the bottom of the Kiwi Scrum Page.)

The Useful Common:

Do you use an RSS feed to read blogs? In my survey of almost 100 people only THREE read blogs regularly and NONE used a RSS reader to do it. So for most of you here's a little lifestyle change. Start using Google Reader, and build your self-selected feed base. Advantage? Access to all your favourite people in a fraction of the time.

Do you know Scott Ginsberg "That Guy with the Nametag"? I've been getting Scott's email notices for three years. I now get his RSS feed. He's amazing. I know how hard it is to come up with good ideas that just keep flowing and flowing. Scott's work is well worth reading. "The 10 Secrets to Becoming Your Own Muse" is classic Ginsberg. It's also classic Veitch, I've been writing publicly about this for 20 years (And privately for 16 years before that.) .

Engage with other people and Groups:

James Hamilton fresh back from overseas started the Christchurch Business Networking Group which now has 57 members. Amy Carter initiated a 4 pm gathering at a local watering hole. There were about 18 in attendance. A huge success. It seems that the time for local groups might be here.

Invitations

Please tell your friends about Kiwi Scrum. Do a local advanced search. Who lives in your area who's not a Kiwi Scrum member? How many LinkedIn Members are there in your town or city? Is it time to form a local Group; or a sub group in Kiwi Scrum? Have you been using the Kiwi Scrum Guide to promote the use of LinkedIn at your workplace. People pretend to know but most of them are faking it.

Volunteers

Here is a little market research test for you to undertake in your office or workplace. In June last year the Cluetrain Manifesto was 10 years old. Put these three questions on a piece of paper.
1. Do you know about "The Cluetrain Manifesto"?
2. Can you name one of the authors of "The Cluetrain Manifesto"?
3. Can you explain one of the 95 key ideas in "The Cluetrain Manifesto"?
I expect the results will shock you. It might explain why your efforts to generate any enthusiasm for LinkedIn or social networking in the office generally fall on deaf ears.

I published this short version of the key ideas in 2004.

I'd be very pleased to hear about your results.

The Value of Social Networking

The Internet is jamb packed with newbies. I have set up a network on Ryze where newbies can get help. It's called Social Networking Newbies. You can view it without joining. I choose Ryze because its very simple and unconfused. Also because on Ryze there are hundreds of people who have been doing online social networking for six years and sometimes more. There are at least 12 people with that sort of experience offering to act as online mentors to newbies. Too good to miss I'd believe. Here's a starter letter about using LinkedIn as a newbie.
