LinkedIn now has in excess of 65 million members, with a strong business focus. About half of LinkedIn members are outside the U.S.A.
It's not very clear what LinkedIn is useful for when you first join. There are huge numbers of people who have joined, but because they have close to zero contacts far too many sit isolated and inactive.
While LinkedIn has a very big number of users, MOST of them are not yet really LinkedIn at all. You really need at least 30 connections to others to use LinkedIn well. The median number of connections is less than 10. So for many people their experience of using LinkedIn is poor. Don't let that happen to you. Join several LinkedIn groups, and actively try to expand you own network, especially in the beginning.
Here is a table that shows a typical group of LinkedIn members. Most of them clearly have no idea that they are part of a powerful and beneficial network. While they did join, they have taken no action to become "LinkedIn", and their networks (less than 30 members) are essentially useless. Don't let that happen to you.
There are two things you need to do. Join more LinkedIn Groups, and directly connect to more people. In the beginning you need to be a little active in making this happen. These notes will help you.
Stan Relihan talks to Ron Bates in this very interesting interview about the value of Linkedin.
