Climate scientist Kevin Anderson warns that continuing on our current path could result in a 3-4°C temperature rise by the end of the century, a catastrophic outcome to be avoided at all costs. He cautions against believing the political rhetoric about progress in the fight against climate change and calls on us to push for bold policy changes.

Over last few weeks we’ve gotten a glimpse of what this dystopian future could look like. The unprecedented forest fires in Quebec, preceded by massive fires in Nova Scotia, British Columbia and Alberta, have resulted in dangerously unhealthy air all across the United States. New York, Washington DC, Detroit, Chicago, Milwaukee and other cities have reported some of their worst air quality levels ever as people with chronic illness have been forced to remain indoors. Meanwhile, during this same period, Texas has experienced a record-breaking heat wave. In Corpus Christi the heat index, a measure of temperature combined with humidity, reached a hundred and twenty-five—close to the level at which humans are able to survive.

We are entering a critical decade in our history, in which a failure to enact unprecedented changes in all aspects of industrialized societies may lead to a catastrophic and irreversible ecological collapse. In this video I survey the most relevant scientific facts related with our current climate and ecological crisis, and urge all members of society to take immediate action for systemic change.
