Insulin Resistance and Obesity

I first heard about insulin resistance in about 2014, without understanding. But in 2016 during his trial, Prof. Timothy Noakes mentioned it in these two very short videos.

I'm not sure that Prof. Noakes himself really understands insulin resistance. He says it's genetic. Other's say that it's simply the pyhsological response to too much insulin in the blood over a long time, and body cells start to "ignore" the hormone signal from insulin, just like the smell receptors in your nose begin to ignore a perfume you are wearing. Then again many endocrinologists believe that obesity causes insulin resistance. Does insulin resistance cause obesity, or does obesity cause insylin resistance? I leave you to think about that.
